Since its inception in 2015, The Joey Lup Foundation has put together various events raising nearly $100,000. We’ve had great success hosting several fundraisers including baseball tournaments, happy hours, and a casino night.
The core goal of the foundation is to offer comfort and assistance to individuals battling cancer along with their families. With a kind and generous heart, helping others in need was one of Joey’s strongest attributes. Keeping with those values, the funds raised by the Joey Lup Foundation are used in several ways to give back. The JLF has assisted numerous families by making mortgage payments or paying other household bills to ease the financial strain when burdened with the expense of cancer treatments.
The JLF has also made a donation to Dr. Horowitz, at Memorial Sloan Kettering supporting his mission to research Gamma Delta T-cell Lymphoma and other T-cell Lymphoma type cancers. More than 300 care packages have been distributed to patients during their stay at Sloan Kettering. The packages consist of comforting items like a Joey Lup Foundation monogrammed blanket and wrist band, an iTunes gift card and a warm hat as a small token of hope and support.
Being true to Joey’s hometown, one goal is to give back to those in his community. Starting spring 2017, eight high school seniors (four from hicksville, four from Bethpage) have been awarded $500 scholarships toward their college education. Students applying for the scholarship were asked to write an essay on how they, or their families, had been affected by cancer. Reviewing the essays was a sobering reminder of how cancer can affect any and everyone.
This past September, Hot Stove Baseball hosted a weekend-long fundraising event made up of 38 teams, more than 450 players across multiple fields in Nassau and Suffolk counties. With its great turnout and success, we are planning for another tournament for fall 2019, promising to be even bigger and better with more teams and more fields.
For the third year in a row, the Joey Lup Foundation has made a $5000 donation in honor of Joey to “Light The Night,” hosted by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The “Light The Night” walk brings together cancer survivors and supporters with the celebration of light to drive out the darkness of cancer. Visit their website lightthenight.org for more information.
Your contributions to the Joey Lup Foundation are helping make a difference. We thank you for your continuous support, and for honoring Joey Luparello.
